“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”
Curtis Martin, founder of Fellowship Of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), offers a different, and powerfully compelling perspective of this well-known parable. What if Jesus is the man and you are the treasure?
The men who participated in the Life of a Disciple retreat this past weekend are probably feeling like they just lived this alternative perspective in a profound way! As Fr. Riccardo introduced (or re-introduced as the case may be) us to Jesus Christ, we heard Jesus tell us from the cross, “I did this for you [put your name here] because I love you this much! Because you are worth it!” It’s worth reading that quote out loud… often!
The Creator of the Universe sees you as that wonderful treasure! He’s found so much value in you that He gave up His very self to purchase you! Not as a slave, but as His friend!
The first step, as we heard, is simply to answer His call and to spend time getting to know Him, just like you would with anyone else. He’ll let you know when it’s time to DO. First he just wants you to BE… Be with Him as you get to know Him… Be purposeful in finding quiet time to spend in His company… Be a friend who listens more than talks… Just BE!
Now, stop for a moment... take a deep, cleansing breath... and recite the quote from above replacing your name with the name of your biggest foe.
